SALMON farming
started on an experimental level in the 1960s, and today it accounts for over 70% of all salmon produced globally. The salmon industry has been going through responsible growth and has the potential to feed more people with fewer resources than required for other protein sources.
Only a handful of nations and businesses have the access to this technology, but it makes a big difference in how they breed their salmon. As relatively small aquaculture farmers, at Bakkafrost we strive to innovate and push the envelope in the direction of sustainability.

CRUCIAL LOCATION
the faroe islands
Bakkafrost’s farming is located in the Faroe Islands, a remote group of islands isolated in the North Atlantic between Norway, Scotland and Iceland. The Gulf stream dominates this ocean, which is the Atlantic salmon’s native habitat. Sea temperature around these islands is low (8°C to 14°C/ 46°F to 57°F) and relatively stable year-round, only fluctuating about 10 degrees, making it the most ideal climate for salmon. As a result, salmon grow slowly but steadily, giving Bakkafrost salmon their characteristic firm meat structure. The Faroe Islands’ fjords are also surrounded by some of with powerful currents that continuously and organically clean the fjords.

sustainability
our approach
Bakkafrost operates a fully vertically integrated value chain, which allows the highest level of transparency in all stages of our operations – including making fish meal, fish oil, salmon feed, roe production, freshwater hatcheries and saltwater ocean pens, together with harvest and processing facilities. Bakkafrost also has its own modern fleet of vessels that clean, feed and transport the salmon, as well as producing its own EPS transportation boxes. We also have a bio gas plant that transforms biological waste to energy and fertilizer.
